Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal is a popular procedure, and thanks to new laser technology known as PicoSure, it is more effective than ever. The procedure can be done non-invasively without resulting in scarring.

What is Tattoo Removal?

The central challenge of tattoo removal is how to erase permanent ink that lies several layers beneath the skin. Our laser systems solve this problem by breaking down tattoo ink at the molecular level. By using the correct wavelength of light, certain colors can be specifically targeted. The molecules of pigment are broken down and absorbed by the immune system, an accelerated version of the fading that occurs with time or sun exposure. Black ink, since it contains all color wavelengths within it, is the easiest to remove, followed by blue and other dark hues. Yellows, greens, and fluorescents are the most challenging colors to remove and may require additional treatments.

What Happens During the Appointment?

First, the skin is prepared with a topical anesthetic to minimize pain. The laser is run over the targeted section of the skin. Each individual treatment takes only a few minutes, but many sessions may be necessary to achieve complete removal. To give the pigment time to dissolve, a 7-8 week healing period between treatments is recommended. Most patients will see gradual fading of the tattoo over the course of the treatment plan.

The number of sessions and duration of healing time depends on several factors, including:

  • Where the tattoo is located
  • Skin color
  • Strength of the immune system

This last factor is the one most directly under the patient’s control. By ensuring good nutrition, reducing your stress levels, sleeping well, and exercising, you can bolster your immune response and speed up the tattoo removal process.
