What are Chin Implants?
An underdeveloped or weak looking chin often makes other facial features appear larger than they are. Chin implants can correct this issue. This is a cosmetic surgery procedure using implants or bone grafting to provide structure in the chin and create a more prominent looking appearance. Chin augmentation using facial implants is a permanent solution using an extensive procedure to change one’s appearance.
As an alternative, chin augmentation may also involve fat transfer or another dermal filler. When using fat, the procedure involves harvesting the fat from another area of the body using liposuction. Once it is injected into the area of the chin, it is molded and shaped to give the chin more definition.
Benefits of a Chin Implant
Chin augmentation, or chin implants, give more structure to a weak looking face. It also offers the following benefits:
- Strong jaw line
- Permanent results
- Proportionate facial features
- Increased self-confidence
- Stronger profile
Who is a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?
Candidates for chin implants are self-conscious about their chins and how it may be more prominent compared to the other features of the face. Chin implant surgery is typically done to enlarge a small chin or to enhance a “weak” looking chin that lacks any angles or definition.
What Do I Do to Prepare for My Chin Implant?
Prior to having chin augmentation, you must schedule an initial consultation to determine whether you are a candidate for a chin implant procedure and to discuss the procedure. During this appointment, you must also provide a full medical history and medical clearance from your physician to make sure you are able to undergo the surgery. Additionally, you may be asked to undergo bloodwork to test for underlying issues.
You may be asked to stop smoking and taking any medications or supplements that thin the blood for a couple of weeks prior to surgery as well as after the procedure is complete. This is another step to achieving your desired look. You also receive detailed pre-op and post-op instructions to better prepare you.
What Should I Expect on the Day of My Chin Implant?
The facial implant used in chin augmentation is typically a Silastic implant made of silicone that provides excellent and natural looking results. When performing this procedure, a small incision is made under the chin. From there, a pocket is created beneath the muscles of the chin where a chin implant is inserted and affixed to the bone. The incision is then closed and bandaged to protect and support the chin.
How Long Does a Chin Implant Take to Perform?
Chin augmentation takes about half an hour and is performed under heavy sedation or general anesthesia.
What to Expect After My Chin Implant
Chin implantation recovery is minimal with most patients returning to work within a week or so. Stitches are typically removed after about four or five days. Since the incision is under the chin, it is not very noticeable.
We recommend you take a few days off work and responsibilities to rest and allow your incision and chin to heal. We also suggest you eat soft foods for the first few days as the chin and jawline may be sore. Any discomfort or soreness is easily managed with over the counter medications.
Any swelling and bruising typically fades away within about two weeks. At that point, you can go back to your normal routine; however, we recommend you avoid any contact sports or anything that may have direct impact with your new chin for about eight weeks.
Will I Have Scars from a Chin Implant?
There is no noticeable scarring with chin augmentation since the incision is made under the chin. When done by an experienced plastic surgeon, once healed, the scarring is minimal and often fades over time.
When Will I See the Results?
As the swelling and bruising fade, the results of the chin implant become subtly more noticeable. Your facial features are more proportionate with each other, and you have a new confident look.
How Much Does a Chin Implant Cost?
Chin implant procedures vary in cost based on the implant used, how much is involved in the procedure and whether other procedures or treatments are done at the same time. We can discuss the cost with you during your consultation, along with our payment and financing options.
